2nd Sunday of Advent (C) December 10, 2000
Christian Family Movement
Every Family a Domestic Church -- in Mission to the World

"Turn away from your sins and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins."
Dear Friend,

For the second Sunday of Advent, let us prepare our families for the coming of Christ through the Gospel according to Luke 3:1-6. What is Luke, the disciple of Paul, trying to teach us in this Gospel? Prepare the family to listen to the Holy Spirit. Let them sit around comfortably. Light a small candle at the middle. Request them to go through a breathing exercise (inhale slowly, pause a while before exhaling) several times.

Read first this Gospel to your family. Read again slowly verses 3 to 6.

Then, ask everyone if he/she can accept that he/she had sinned.

          Luke quoted Isaiah:

"Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!
Every valley must be filled up, every hill and mountain leveled off.
The winding roads must be made straight, and the rough road must be made smooth.
All mankind will see God’s salvation!"
The Lord seeks our salvation because He loves us but He leaves it to each one of us to make the moves towards this end. Talk about what Isaiah suggested we do.

Prayer and Reflection ~

In a moment of silence, request everyone to examine one’s conscience through the following reflection questions (based on 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7) --

  • Have I been impatient?

  • Have been unkind?

  • Have I been jealous?

  • Have I been conceited?

  • Have I been proud?

  • Have I been ill-mannered or selfish or irritable?

  • Have I kept records of wrongs?

  • Have I been happy with evil?

  • Have I failed to love?
Let everyone think of anyone (living or dead) whom one had offended, and deep within oneself, ask for forgiveness.

After this moment of reflection, request everyone to approach each one and say: "I forgive you!"

To end the family prayer, recite together the prayer taught by the Lord.
