Every Family a Domestic Church -- in Mission to the World

"I tell you that if you do not turn from your sins, you will all die as they did."
Dear Friend,

The disciples were listening while Jesus was talking with some people about some Galileans and about other 18 people from Jerusalem who were killed in two separate occasions. The people wanted to know from Jesus if these persons were killed because they were the worse sinners among the people.

To this, Jesus replied: "I tell you: no. But if you won't change your ways, you will all perish as they did." (Luke13:5)

Read this Gospel to your family (Luke 13:1-9) to help your family members derive the same teachings as the disciples did.

"if you won't change your ways, you will all perish as they did."

Hearing this, the disciples must have recalled Jesus telling a would-be follower, "Let the dead bury the dead." (Luke 9:60) That time, the disciples learned that those who were useless to the kingdom were as good as "dead." This time, they learned that some men are "dead" because they won't turn from their sins. They would not give up their life to have life. As Jesus said earlier to them, "For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it, and if you lose your life for my sake, you will save it." (Luke 9:24)

"Leave it one more year, so that I may dig around and put in some fertilizer; and perhaps it will bear fruit from now on. But if it doesn't, you can cut it down."

The disciples easily understood this as Jesus mentioned to them about healthy fruit bearing trees before. Read also Luke 6:43-45. A disciple must remain healthy and is expected to bear Him "fruits." They understood that they are in His vineyard being cared for, for this purpose.

Prayer and Reflection ~

Spend a few minutes in silent reflection with the words of Jesus.

  • The Lord cares for me but I have to remain faithful to Him and bear Him "fruits." How does He care for me?

  • He wants me to turn from sin. What makes me sin?

  • What are the "fruits" the Lord expects from me?
