Dear Friend,
We find the parable related by Jesus to His disciples according to Luke 16:1-13 a difficult to understand. It was about a crafty steward of a rich man who was suspected of fraudulent service. The steward did not deny it but instead, he went on to his master’s debtors and changed the figures, hoping to gain favor from these debtors when he loses his job – an astute or shrewd behavior.
Read the Gospel to your family and find out the lesson Jesus was trying to convey to His disciples.
After finding out what the steward did, the master instead of reprimanding the steward commended him for what he did. Why do you think the master did this?
Listen to the comment of Jesus: "For the people of this world are more astute in dealing with their own kind than are the people of light."
Jesus means that the rich man and his steward are of the same kind. But Jesus reminded His disciples that they are the "people of light." He describes the "people of light" as --
-
He who can be trusted in little things can then be trusted in great things.
-
He who is honest in little things can then be honest in greater one.
-
He who serves only God and not money.
The disciples are to serve not for material things they can get but for the love of God.
Prayer and Reflection ~
When we serve in the Church, what is our motivation? Love of God? Love of fellowmen? Prestige? Or money?
Let the following words of Jesus to His disciples ring through in the ears of the family:
"Set your heart first on the kingdom and the justice of God and all these things will be given to you." (Matthew 6:33)
